FLOATPLANES

Kachemak Air Service, Inc.

Over the years our aircraft have carried famous nature and wildlife photographers including Fred Hirschmann, Tom Mangelson, Galen Rowell, Johnny Johnson, Kennan Ward, Erwin Bauer, Michio Hoshino, Leo Keeler, Tony Dawson, Lynn Stone, and Larry Aumiller; we've hauled BBC and Nature TV crews and their mountains of equipment; and we've flown with thousands other special people just like you since 1967.

Now you can go sightseeing with us in our 1929 Travel Air S6000B "Limousine of the Air" over the mountains, glaciers, and shores of Kachemak Bay. In one hour you'll fly over a hundred miles of our most unforgettable scenery. And while the scenery is breathtaking, the aircraft is unique too. Once, back in the '30s, as a publicity stunt sponsored by a fuel company, this aircraft was kept in the air non-stop for almost two weeks using primitive air-to-air refueling (the hose was simply dangled down from another Travel air - a 6000 later flown by Lindbergh to Mexico with Ann Morrow and thus named "Romancer"). Today, she's better than new after restoration with modern materials. It's like a sunday afternnon drive in our Pierce Arrow.

For brown bear viewing, backpacking, fishing, kayaking, and cargo hauling the de Havilland Otter we used to operate was (and is) the finest aircraft available for the job. It offered unequalled dependability and reliability with room to haul just about anything... including the kitchen sink. In fact, our Otter carried every stick of lumber, every brick, every countertop, every closet door, and every stick of furniture to build and furnish the delightful Loonsong Lodge. (The only thing the Otter couldn't carry was the huge round picture window for the bedroom...click on the link and you'll see it). With a capacity of 9 plus a pilot or a load of up to 2000 pounds, the Otter was state-of-the-art for the kind of flying we did. In the picture above we're loading/unloading folks and their equipment at McNeil River. Now guests at Loonsong arrive and depart in style in the Travel Air.

Aviation enthusiasts and history buffs, will find below a few pages we've put together dedicated to the people our Travel Air has touched.
